Further
Information:
Before the war Geoffrey was working as a Police Constable
in London and living as a boarder at 25 Walnut Tree Rd, East Greenwich. He
was listed as single.
His military record states that his conduct was first
class, he was 5ft 9 1/2 inches tall with grey eyes and dark brown hair and a
fresh complexion.
He enlisted on 5 October 1914 and was killed on 3 May
1915. At the time of his death his mother Annie was living at Woodbine
Cottage in Osmington.
The Commonwealth war grave records show that Geoffrey
was buried and there are differing references to the location but it is
believed to be plot B31. His burial was carried out by his comrades and he
was buried next to a fellow Marine Private William Dews from Yorkshire.
The inscription chosen by Geoffrey’s family for his
grave stone in Twelve tree copse cemetary Cape Helles is,
“Their Glory shall not be blotted out”.
